Great interview. You touched on past energy source, wood. I imagine that helps folks new to the concept.
Wood is also a current energy source for many. Here in the U.S. most I run into don’t know how to make an efficient hot fire.
Abundant wood where I live, and more where I’ll retire to in a few years.
I’ll be adding a basement wood burning stove to the house. The inefficient open stone fireplace in the upstairs nevertheless will run you out of the room with the house heat off at 15 degrees Fahrenheit outside [minus 9.4 Celcius].
I won’t be solely depending on the propane tank that powers the furnace.
Being cold is serious, particularly for young children, ill folks, and older people like my 93 year old mother on blood thinners. It does bother me how many are likely to be miserably cold in northern climates as utility prices rise.
Agree. Cold is deadly serious. I’ve cut more wood this year than any year in my life.

There was a point in time where kunstler seemed to have relevant, and had somewhat sane things to share. That time was about 15 years ago. I don’t know what happened, but he is definitely angry and bitter…about something. Personally, I would find it hard to actually tie together a list of folks I would like to blame for everything in one article, but somehow he found a way. Maybe its something that happens with age, as it also seems to be happening to a degree with Gail Tverberg. A few missives questioning vaccinations and/or covid, and now 10-29% of the messages on her site are almost identical to the folks who show up on kunstlers rants, er, ‘blog’. Its one thing to question a hypothesis, but once someone starts mistaking their opinion/emotions for objective reality…look out.
There are plenty of things going on by privileged or empowered incompetents that should arouse some emotion.
That may range from irritation to disgust to rage, and everything in between.
Now it doesn’t do me much good to get upset over things I have little control over.
But someone willing to passionately point out some of the utter BS going down is ok with me.
I have less than no problem with folks pointing out problems in our society. It IS interesting to watch them point out the BS they don’t like, while ignoring or glossing over the BS they are ok with.
Here I would probably use the term ‘pathologically’ is lieu of passionately. In some ways, this reminds me of what happened to my dad – gifted eye surgeon, but then tv, talk radio and art bell in retirement made him angry and fearful of the most unlikely things at the end of his life.
Reading kunstler’s message forum for the above link was, to me, a bit chilling in its explicit racism. At a certain point, I assume that anyone serially reading it, more or less agrees with it. I mean, we have problems, and some of those don’t actually HAVE solutions. Energy and resource depletion would, in my mind, probably qualify. I have always sort of hoped that as we got closer to what the hubbert curve, and thermodynamics have in store for us, we might start to pull together. Its seems not.
I don’t get the racism you mention.

Kunstler was early identifying the energy problem and one of the best expressing it in laymen’s terms. Steve linked to Kunstler’s site for years. James has also maintained a solid grasp of the monetary aspect of our unfolding dilemma. I particularly appreciate his speaking out on the society damaging gender-confusion issue and the Corp/gov mind-fcukery in general. Like this website, Clusterfuck Nation blog a public service.
